What do you look for in a book?

Write a note about what you look for when you are choosing a book to read. Do you prefer novels, biographies, history books, sports books? Is character important to you or are you drawn to books with plenty of action? Have you ever been disappointed by a book that did not live up to expectations?

Refer to books you have read in the past or whatever you are reading now. Don’t forget to give the name of the author.

I’m looking forward to reading your posts!

  1. I prefer novels or history books. Character is important but I prefer books with a plot twist or a good back story, with plenty of action. For the past few years I’ve become obsessed with the supernatural genre and classic lit. (e.g Pride and Predudice and The Lords of the Rings)

I have never been disappointed by a book.

  2. Thanks for that Leaha! I am delighted to hear that you have never been disappointed by a book.

  3. I usually prefer sports biographies or history books. I am not really interested in fiction books because I prefer books that are factual and have a meaning . I like football and rugby so I usually prefer them as biographies .I also like history books as I enjoy doing the subject in school . I have never been disappointed by a book .

  4. When I read a novel I like if there are eccentric characters and twists in the plot. A good example of this would be the “Series of Unfortuante Events” books which I read when I was much younger. I tend to read autobiographies and history books but I also like to read novels and sports biographies.

My favourite book ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck which we studied for the Junior Cert. It was an interesting portrayal of the strength of human spirit. George and Lenny fought for their dream until the bitter end.

I am currently reading ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ by John Steinbeck which is an interesting look at unemploynment in the Southern States of the USA in the 1930’s and is actually quite relevant to our economic situation in Ireland today.

Other books I have enjoyed reading include:

The Catcher in the Rye – J.D. Salinger
    The Alchemist – Paolo Coehlo
Harry Potter Series – J.K. Rowling
    The Client – John Grisham

  5. I usually prefer books about real events and characters, characters that you can make a connection with and an interesting story to tie all events together. I don’t read much so when I do it would have to be a very good book.
